Egg prices soar due to Avian flu
In the US, we're seeing prices as high as $13 per dozen; Canadians still paying ~$3.
Last month, Avian flu was found in chicken flocks in Georgia, the largest egg-producing state in the US. The “culling” of those flocks is sending egg prices still higher, with no end in sight as more flocks are affecting. Currently US prices are over a third higher than last year.
Canadians are busy posting their prices, lower than the average US price right now of around $4+/dozen—but in some places in the US, it’s as high as $13/dozen. Canada uses a different supply management system, which regulates production, imports, and prices to ensure stability. Darn - there goes that social welfare system again.
