Our paid subscription posts often do, so a heads up about our subscription sale now through May 11, Mother’s Day, in honor of Rosie the Riveter. Rosie, the WWII symbol of [real] patriotism, opened the door for millions of Boomer women to invent how to have both a career and kids…a how-to book we’re admittedly all still writing.)

The Times interviewed globe-trotting restauranteur and Top Chef winner Kirsten Kish on her new memoir, “Accidentally on Purpose.” The memoir takes us through her childhood as a Korean adoptee in Michigan, coming out as gay in her late 20s, winning Season 10 of Top Chef, and struggling with anxiety…although you’d never know it when you see her in person. the interview focuses on her best travel tips.
Pockets in pants! Yes!!
“A lot of women’s pants have little pockets that go down maybe three inches. I need them to touch my thigh. Because I’m not a purse kind of person, I like to fit my wallet, keys and mints all in my pocket if I can,” Kish says.
As one of those Boomer ceiling-threatening women, I figured out early on that no one would take me seriously in business unless I carried a briefcase—and that an additional ‘girl purse’ immediately cancelled the briefcase credibility. After a couple centuries in business, I’ve been completely deprogrammed on purses; they’re now something I know I’ll leave behind at the restaurant if I do carry one. While I’ve been known to have suspicious lumps in my bra, that’s not as…dependable…as a nice, simple pocket. Thank you, Kristen!
…and a lot more
I love travel tips anyway; I have 5 million miles on one airline alone (Love Delta!) Whether you’re a genuine road warrior or just want to make travel as stress-free as possible, Kish covers great travel tricks from parental check-ins (so she’s seen their faces at the end of the day) to her favorite gluten-free snacks, baseball caps and palo santo as security blankets, living through tasting 15 dishes, Carmex lip balm, and using the mute button to just get. rid. of. the. noise.
Great ideas from her here—enjoy!
