Jake Goodman MD, a board certified psychiatrist, posts on Substack as Mental Health Movement. For most people, psychiatrists—physicians—are the often invisible1 prescriber backing up the counseling frontline of behavior health…the person psychologists, LCSWs, and other mental health therapists call when medication is needed. So I can’t tell you how unusual it is, in my experience, to have an actual MD psychiatrist put themselves out front and center with enthusiasm.
Dr. Goodman focuses on memory, cognition, and dementia prevention, all of which are hot topics, particularly as we age.2 His posts are easy reading, down to earth, and backed by data and references, not the musings of self-help gurus. Here are several posts I really enjoyed…and hope you do, too!

The most overlooked dementia risk I see in my clinic every week—and this one is as big a surprise as it is easy to fix.
What readers described as “the first lists about dementia prevention that actually feel do-able:” 7 boring habits that cut dementia risk, Part 1 and Part 2.
And, yah, that dark chocolate during the holidays was maybe your best nutritional step: Dark chocolate, dementia, and depression: What you need to know, with info on ever-changing step count recommendations as well.
Like all of us, Dr. Goodman hopes you’ll comment, ❤️, restack posts you like, or subscribe, free or paid. Spread the word; it’s a terrific site! And don’t forget to tell us about great Substack sites you use the most! Thanks..on to a great new year for all of us!
If you’re in healthcare and know anything about Meyers-Briggs or similar personality inventories used to build work teams, it’s not hard to identify where the introverts are. They’re often healthcare faculty who love teaching but quickly scurry back to the office to recover. Nurses who love night shift. Anesthesiologists and pathologists with minimum patient contact. And, in my experience, many outstanding psychiatrists.
…perhaps with an eye to undoing potential damage done in our youth? Just sayin.’ Not you, of course. 😁
