Update on the Dire Wolf Emotional Support Pet Program at St. Luke’s Hospital
Yes, the correct reaction is, "Say, what???" Let author Jennie Young take you on a parody ride for a morning grin (or grimace) with her deft challenge on the "why??" of 'de-extinction.'
Here’s something to talk about at dinner: a masterfully written parody by writer Jennie Young about the de-extinction (maybe) of dire wolves featured on Game of Thrones.
If you’re in healthcare, this reads very realistically…to a point. Either way, remember that there are only three very young dire wolf (ish) pups in existence (for better or worse), at a research facility nowhere near any hospital pet therapy program—at least so far. Colossal Biosciences has taken both grief and applause for attempting to bring back the extinct species, with more than a few bursting the bubble of claims of de-extinction.
"Any new technologies carry some risk of unintended consequences – biotechnologies are not unique in this way." No kidding, and that’s what Young’s story explores with this fantasy tale.
Jennie takes this bizarre news story and blends it seamlessly with recognizable hospital environments and pet support programs. The irony is excellent as she subtly asks, “Why?”
Give everyone something to talk about with her excellent imagination and very real ethical questions.
